The Chemical and Physical Properties of Colored Metal, by German chemist Werner Heisenberg, is an amazingly clear, concise, well-written book. Heisenberg explains the basics of his revolutionary concept with ease and detail, in a very methodical way.Much of the work of Heisenberg's book revolves around discovering ways of measuring the force between particles. Like Einstein, Heisenberg believed that you could understand the behavior of matter through the forces it exerted on its surroundings. Heisenberg took this a step further by using this to explain properties of all known elements. His theories led to the development of many useful tools for studying the atom and the forces acting upon it.However, the book does not mention Einstein and instead works through the experiences of Heisenberg as he discovered things about chemical bon ding. Heisenberg used his knowledge of atoms to make predictions, which were eventually proven true by the development of nuclear physics.As with many things, the story of the emergence of Einstein takes precedence over the discovery of Heisenberg. This is due in part to the fact that Einstein had proven his ideas beyond reasonable doubt, and so was viewed as being the more important scientist.As with most books, the book focuses on some of the more popular topics, such as chemistry and particle physics. This book is meant to be just as accessible as it is in-depth. In fact, Heisenberg's book is actually titled Chemical and Physical Properties of Colored Metal, because this was all he worked on during his time at MIT.It is also interesting to note that this book, like many books on Physics and Materials Science, comes from a German speaking country. If you are interested in learning more about the idea of Heisenberg's book, it might be best to read the book itself.Overall, Heisenber g's book is a classic.
